How Working Part-Time & Full-Time Affects Your Monthly Benefits
You can receive disability benefits while working part-time & full-time, but it’s important to understand how your earnings may impact your benefits. For SSDI Beneficiaries you are provided with a Trial Work Period (TWP) of 9 months where you can earn as much as you can. For SSI Beneficiaries your benefits will be reduced by $1 for every $2 you earn.
When you're ready to return to work, SGA guidelines allow you to gradually test your ability to maintain employment without risking your benefits. You may qualify for an extended period of eligibility of up to three (3) years or thirty-six (36) months.
Maximize Your Disability Benefits By Reporting the Following Information
While the SSA encourages you to return to work, they also require you to report specific changes in your employment. We can assist you when to notify SSA of the following if:
- You start or stop working
- Your work hours change
- Your pay rate changes
- You incur work-related expenses due to your disability
Additionally, if you lose your job while still in your trial work period, your disability benefits may remain unaffected. If your job loss occurs during the extended period of eligibility, your benefits may be reinstated if you are still disabled.
On your own, you might become overwhelmed exploring jobs you can perform with your capabilities, navigating the process how to apply for jobs, overcoming difficult interview questions, etc. We are here to help you!
